The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets will play game two of three on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
Don’t look now, but the Pirates are finally playing up to expectations, winning five of their last six games. The Pirates are still four games below a .500 record, but their pitching staff has allowed three or fewer runs in four of their last five games. That’s a massive improvement from a Pittsburgh team that is ranked 17th in ERA. Offensively, Neil Walker has eight hits in his last five games and Andrew McCutchen had two hits and two walks in Monday’s win. Edinson Volquez gets the start, and he’s 2-4 with a 4.37 ERA and has 32 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. Volquez is 1-5 with a 7.11 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets.
The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports
The Mets have lost nine of their last 12 games and are burring themselves in the NL East standings. While the Mets pitching staff is doing its part with the 14th best ERA in the majors, the lineup has been held to three or fewer runs in eight of their last 12 games. The Mets are 2-20 when being held to three runs or less this season. David Wright has 16 hits in his last 10 games and Daniel Murphy is riding a four-game hitting streak. Getting the nod is Jonathon Niese, who is 3-3 with a 2.70 ERA and has 43 strikeouts in 56.2 innings. Niese is 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA in four career starts against the Mets.
The Pirates are 6-1 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series and 1-5 in their last 6 games as an underdog. The Mets are 4-1 in Niese's last 5 starts as a favorite and 2-8 in their last 10 during game 2 of a series. The Pirates are 6-13 in the last 19 meetings in New York.
Neither team has been all that great this season, but we're getting the plus money with the hotter team in Pittsburgh. I'll roll the dice with the Pirates for the added value.
