The Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers begin a four-game series on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.
Despite losing two of three to the New York Mets, the Pirates are playing some of their best baseball of the season by winning six of their last nine games. The Pirates batting lineup is still a work in progress, but the pitching staff has allowed three or less runs in five of their last 10 games, which is an improvement with the way things have gone this season. Offensively, Neil Walker has a nine-game hitting streak and Gaby Sanchez has homered twice in his last seven games. Getting the nod is Gerrit Cole, who is 4-3 with a 3.76 ERA and has 60 strikeouts in 64.2 innings. This will be Cole’s second career start against the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have also won six of their last nine games and just took two of three from the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers pitching staff has really picked it up as of late, allowing three or less runs in six of their last eight games. The Dodgers are 20-8 this season when allowing three or less runs. Offensively, Andre Either has eight RBI in his last 10 games and Dee Gordon has gotten on base at least once in six straight games. Getting the nod is Dan Haren, who is 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA and has 48 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. Haren is 3-2 with a 4.98 ERA in eight career starts against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 4-1 in Cole's last 5 starts and 7-3 in Cole's last 10 starts during game 1 of a series. The Dodgers are 5-0 in their last 5 during game 1 of a series and 4-1 in their last 5 games as a home favorite. The Pirates are 14-37 in the last 51 meetings in Los Angeles and 25-67 in the last 92 meetings overall.
At this price you have to like the Dodgers at home. They're the better team and have the slightly better pitcher. This series could get ugly if the Dodgers bats begin to heat up, as Pittsburgh simply doesn't have enough offense to keep up.
