The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies open a weekend series at Citizen's Bank Park on Thursday.
The Mets don't look like they'll be a factor in the National League East but a .500 finish and fourth place are a possibility. New York moved to within three games of the breakeven point following a 5-0 victory over visiting Pittsburgh. It was a rare sight with both the arms and bats on the same page with Bartolon Colon toss scoreless ball over 7.1 innings while whiffing nine to improve to 4-5. The NYM posted six hits and walked eight times with Ruben Tejada and David Wright slamming homers and driving in two runs apiece. The Mets open the series with Philadelphia with Zack Wheeler on the hill. Wheeler looks to duplicate his last outing where he gave up all three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.2 innings.

The Phillies are holding out hope they can turn their season around and make a run at the National League East. That sounds good but actually doing it hasn't happened as of yet but perhaps the momentum of Wednesday's 9th inning rally that produced a 6-3 win over Colorado is the start. Roberto Hernandez held the Rockies to a pair of runs over 5.2 frames before Jake Diekman gave up a 9th inning run to give the visitors a 3-2 lead before the Philadelphia came to life at the plate with four runs in the bottom of the 9th. Chase Utley tied the game 3-3 before Ryan Howard clubbed a walkoff three run bomb. Rookie David Buchanan gets his second straight start in place of the injured Cliff Lee. Buchanan won his major league debut with two runs scored on five hits over five frames in a 5-3 win versus the Dodgers.
The Mets give the Phillies a hard time and Philadelphia has yet to show an ability to win consistently so this is a tossup with a rookie hurler. I'm backing them but not thrilled...
