The Detroit Tigers continue their west coast road swing with a stop at the Seattle Mariners.
Detroit appeared to be poised to pull away from the pack in the American League Central but the past few weeks have not been kind to them. The Tigers knocked off Oakland 5-4 Thursday but have still dropped eight of eleven. Rick Porcello gave the visitors a strong effort with a pair of runs scored over 5.2 frames but the 9th was an adventure with Joe Nathan giving up two runs and making things interesting. The offense did just enough damage on eleven hits and a pair of BB with Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera knocking in two runs each. The Tigers send Justin Verlander to the hill to open the series at Seattle. Verlander has struggled in his last three outings with 16 earned runs allowed on 28 hits over 17.1 innings pitched.

Seattle has been getting hot with a few wins and then get cold and give it back which is a trend that has to stop or the Mariners won't get much above the .500 mark and that won't be enough to challenge in the American League West. Even though the offense looks improved the M's still need to control the scoreboard to be a success and that didn't happen in Thursday's 7-5 loss to the Angels. Brandon Mauer struggled early with five runs plated in four innings with the relief corp allowing two more which neutralized the M's power game. Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager blasted long balls and combined for five RBI's. Seattle is scheduled to start Hisashi Iwakuma for just his 6th outing of 2014. Iwakuma looks to rebound from a 4-1 defeat the hands of visiting Houston where was charged with all four runs on nine hits in seven frames.
Backing Seattle against a Justin Verlander seems like a no brainer; take Detroit and don't worry about it. However he has struggled and Iwakuma is no slouch so perhaps the M's can steal one...
