The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners square off in the middle game of their weekend set Saturday.
Detroit was red hot to start the season and they rode that start to take over the top spot in the American League Central. They are now suffering through their first slide of the year with neither the arms or bats getting on the same page. The Tigers might not be playing well but they did Friday in a 6-1 win over the Mariners in the series opener. Justin Verlander returned to form with all three runs given up on five hits in a seven inning stint. The long ball carried the Detroit attack with Rajai Davis going solo while Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez also went deep and combined for for five 's. Lefty Drew Smyly takes the mound looking to bounce back from his worse start of the season. Smyly was charged with six runs on eight hits including four long balls over five frames of a 10-0 loss at Oakland.

The goal for Seattle is to reach .500 and then hopefully move up from there if the offense can produce consistently to compete with the bigger scoring teams in the American League West. The Mariners fell short on the scorebord Friday because their arms and bats struggled. Starter Hisashi Iwakuma was blasted for five runs on eight hits including a pair of homers. The M's attack mustered six hits and walked twice with Kyle Seager leading the way with a two run jack. Chris Young toes the rubber versus the dangerous lineup of the Tigers on Saturday. Young hopes to duplicate the performance in his 5-1 victory over the Angels where allowed the lone run on two hits in 6.1 innings.
Smyly hasn't been good but if Detroit is swinging the bat it might not matter. The problem I have here is I have never been able to pick a Chris Young game worth a hoot...
