The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants face off on Saturday in game three if their series.
The St. Louis Cardinals had been closing the gap on the Brewers in the NL Central but they lost ground again on Friday as they lost to the Giants for the second night in a row. Jon Jay had a hit and drive in three runs, and Allen Craig and Matt Carpenter had hits as the Cardinals scored four runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed eight hits and seven runs while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-3 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Cardinals start Michael Wacha who has no decisions in three of his last four starts. For the season Wacha has allowed 56 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 68 over 67.1 innings for a 3-3 record and a 2.67 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The San Francisco Giants have the best record in baseball and they sent another message to the Cardinals on Friday pounding them in St. Louis. Hunter Pence had two hits including a home run and Angel Pagan, Pablo Sandoval, Michael Morse, and Gregor Blanco each had two hits as the Giants scored nine runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner allowed three hits and struck out 10 over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-3 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Giants start Yusmeiro Petit who has worked out of the bullpen and as a starter. For the season Petit has allowed 42 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 38 over 39 innings for a 3-2 record and a 5.08 ERA.
St. Louis is 402 against the NL West, 40-18 in their last 58 road games, and 2-6 in Wacha’s last eight starts. San Francisco is 25-9 in their last 34 games, 7-1 in their last eight road games against a team with a winning home record, and 8-3 in Petit’s last 11 starts.
The Giants look dialed in here and appear to have the Cards number so I am going to stick with them here.
