The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals will play game two of three on early Saturday afternoon.
Despite the 9-2 loss on Friday, the Rangers have still won five of their last seven games and are a game above a .500 record. The loss to the Nationals were the old Rangers, as they allowed 15 hits along with those nine runs. The Rangers have the 26th worst ERA and are 5-26 when allowing more than three runs. Offensively, Adrian Beltre has seven hits in his last four games and Alex Rios has 18 hits in his last 10 games. Nick Tepesch gets the nod, and he’s 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA and has 16 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. This is Tepesch’s first career start against the Nationals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Nationals have lost six of their last eight games, but Friday’s win was a positive sign of possibly turning things around. Ian Desmond hit his third homerun in seven games and the Nationals improve to 22-2 when scoring more than three runs this season. Of course, runs haven’t been easy for the Nats, as they’ve scored the 24th fewest runs in the majors and struggle even more with Bryce Harper out of the lineup. Doug Fister get the start, and he’s 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA and has 17 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. Fister is 3-4 with a 5.67 ERA in nine career starts against the Rangers.
The Rangers are 4-1 in Tepesch's last 5 starts and 1-4 in Tepesch's last 5 starts during game 2 of a series. The Nationals are 1-7 in their last 8 during game 2 of a series and 8-1 in their last 9 interleague home games vs. a team with a winning record.
I don't exactly trust either pitcher, which is why I'm taking the over. The Nationals bats should remain hot and the Rangers are also due for a breakout offensive performance. Give me the over on the low total.
