The Chicago Cubs shoot for back to back victories over the visiting New York Mets Wednesday night.
The Mets have been playing their best baseball of the season so far as they attempt to reach .500 and hopefully beyond. The New Yorkers had won seven of ten before a 2-1 defeat in the series opener at Wrigley Field. The offense had been doing plenty of scoring lately but not Tuesday which squandered a great effort from Zack Wheeler who tossed a two hitter over 6.2 innings before Joshua Edgin allowed a solo homer in the 8th to blow the save. Scott Rice gave up the winner in the 9th in a game that was destined for the win column. The Mets offense was an RBI hit off the bat of Curtis Granderson in the first and then zilch. The Mets are scheduled to start Daisuke Matsuzaka to the hill for the second time with the Mets taking the field. Matsuzaka won his first outing by a 4-2 count versus Arizona with two runs allowed in six innings.

The Cubs are struggling once again with neither the pitching or hitting getting on the same page often enough and it has to to win because each hasn't been strong enough to win on their own. On Tuesday th work on the mound held the Mets at bay until the offense could scratch out a few runs. Jake Arrieta struggled through 4.2 innings with seven hits and a trio of walks allowed but only the lone run scored. Four relievers put up zeros the rest of the way with Chris Coghlan tying the game with an 8th inning homer while Nate Schierholtz singled in the winner in the 9th. Edwin Jackson will be on the mound for game number two of their series with the Mets. Jackson is just 1-2 with a 5.51 ERA over his last three starts covering 16.1 innings of work.
I am always fearful Matsuzaka who can be great or he can walk everyone in the stadium. Backing Jackson is backing the struggling Cubs and they do have a shot here but the hotter Mets at plus odds is what I'm thinking...
