The Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays take their four-game series to Tampa after the Marlins won the first two games at Marlins Park.
The Marlins took the first two games of this series and improve to 22-11 on the season at home. While the Marlins have been one of the highest scoring teams in the league, they’ve scored three or less runs in seven of their last nine games and have won five of those games. Casey McGehee has 11 hits in his last nine games and Marcell Ozuna has an extra-base hit in three straight games. The Marlins pitching has also been decent the last couple of weeks and that may continue with Tom Koehler on the mound, who is 4-5 with a 3.18 ERA and has 45 strikeouts in 68 innings. This is Koehler’s second career start against the Rays.
USA TODAY Sports
The Rays have now lost eight straight games and are getting absolutely nothing done on the offensive end during this stretch. The Rays have scored two or less runs in six straight games, which includes getting shutout in Tuesday’s loss. Regardless of the Rays poor team ERA of 4.17, you aren’t winning many games scoring that little. Evan Longoria does have a three-game hitting streak going, but he has just one RBI in his last 10 games. Maybe David Price can give the Rays a spark, as he’s 4-4 with a 4.27 ERA and has 90 strikeouts in 84.1 innings. Price is 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in three career starts against the Marlins.
The Marlins are 5-1 in Koehler's last 6 starts with 4 days of rest and 1-4 in Koehler's last 5 road starts. The Rays are 53-25 in Price's last 78 starts with 4 days of rest and 2-7 in Price's last 9 starts during game 3 of a series. The Marlins are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings in Tampa Bay.
Price at home is usually a safe bet, but there's no value with all of the juice. I also don't trust the Rays with the way they've been playing over the last week or so. Koehler is the Marlins ace with Jose Fernandez on the DL. I'll throw Miami a bone at this price.
