The Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds will play game two of three on Saturday afternoon.
The Phillies ended a six-game losing streak with a win on Friday and are now nine games below a .500 record. Finally the Phillies showed a sign of life offensively, scoring eight runs, while they were held to three or less runs in four of their last five games previously. The Phillies pitching staff allowed zero runs for the first time since May 26th, but still have the 25th worst ERA at 4.23. Dominic Byrd has seven hits in his last eight games. Roberto Hernandez will start, and he’s 2-3 with a 4.03 ERA and has 47 strikeouts in 58 innings. Hernandez is 0-1 with a 1.96 ERA in six career games against the Reds.
USA TODAY Sports
The Reds have lost three straight and eight of their last 13 games. While the Reds offense has struggled all season long, it’s been their pitching that has allowed 14 runs in their last two games. Offense, of course, hasn’t been kind to the Reds, a team that is 3-25 this season when allowing more than three runs. Todd Frazier has scored nine runs in his last nine games and Brandon Phillips has a four-game hitting streak going. Alfredo Simon gets the nod, and he’s 7-3 with a 3.03 ERA and has 42 strikeouts in 68.1 innings. Simon is 1-1 with a 0.75 ERA in four career games against the Phillies.
The Phillies are 19-39 in their last 58 road games and 0-5 in their last 5 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Reds are 6-0 in Simon's last 6 starts vs. a team with a losing record and 7-2 in Simon's last 9 starts overall.
I don't feel comfortable taking either one of these teams, which is why I'm siding with the under in this matchup. Both teams struggle to score runs and I expect a sloppy game, something both teams are prone to doing this season.
