The Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox face off on Saturday in Detroit for game two of their series.
The Detroit Tigers have been up and down at times thus far this season but on Friday they put it all together as they knocked off the Red Sox. Torii Hunter had three hits including a home run, Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez each hit home runs, and Nick Castellanos had three hits as the Tigers scored six runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Drew Smyly allowed five hits and two runs, one earned while striking out four over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 3-4 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Max Scherzer who has two no decisions and a loss in his last three starts. For the season Scherzer has allowed 70 hits and 28 earned runs while striking out 89 over 78.2 innings for a 6-2 record and a 3.20 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox haven’t had the look of a defending World Series champion and we saw that once again on Friday. Jonathan Herrera had two hits and David Ortiz and Jonny Gomes each had hits as the Red Sox scored two runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out five over 5.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-1 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Red Sox start Jon Lester who has won his last two starts. For the season Lester has allowed 73 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 95 over 80 innings for a 6-6 record and a 3.15 ERA.
Detroit is 1-5 in their last six games, 19-7 in game two of a series, and 44-17 in Scherzer’s last 61 starts. Boston is 5-3 as an underdog, 2-8 in their last 10 road games, and 4-1 in Lester’s last five road starts.
While both of these pitchers can deal I see the total being a shade low and my free pick is on the over. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
