The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers face off on Saturday at PNC Park for game two of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates started the season slow but they are picking up their play and we saw it on Friday as they blew out the first place Brewers. Andrew McCutchen and Jordy Mercer each hit home runs and Russell Martin had three hits as the Pirates scored 15 runs on 16 hits. Starting pitcher Brandon Cumpton allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out three over 5.1 innings to get the win and raise his record to 1-2 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Pirates stat Edison Volquez who has won two of his last three starts. For the season Volquez has allowed 57 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 44 over 65.2 innings for a 3-4 record and a 4.25 ERA.

The Milwaukee Brewers played possibly their worst game of the season as the Pirates smoked them on Friday. Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez each had two hits and Ryan Braun had a hit as the Brewers scored five runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Kyle Lohse allowed nine hits and eight earned runs while striking out one over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-2 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Brewers start Matt Garza who is coming off of a win in his last start. For the season Garza has allowed 70 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 64 over 73.1 innings for a 3-4 record and a 4.42 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 7-1 against a team with a winning record, 5-1 as a home favorite, and 6-2 in their last eight games. Milwaukee is 6-2 as a favorite, 1-6 in game two of a series, and 5-1 in Garza’s last six starts against a team with a losing record. Milwaukee is 72-32 in the last 104 games against Pittsburgh.
I look for the Brewers to come back strong here and get the win as Volquez has pitched well over late but consistency has never been one of his strengths.
