Starting pitcher Jeff Samardzjia allowed five hits and two runs while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to get the win to go to 2-5 for the season and Pedro Strop earned the save. The Miami Marlins are very much in the mix in the NL East but they lost on Saturday to the Cubs. Christian Yellich had two hits including a home run and Giancarlo Stanton, Casey McGehee, and Garrett Jones each had hits as the Marlins scored two runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Randy Wolf allowed nine hits an four earned runs while striking out two over 5.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-2 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Marlins start Henderson Alvarez who hasn’t allowed a run in his last three starts. For the season Alvarez has allowed 81 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 45 over 75.2 innings for a 3-3 record and 2.62 ERA.
Chicago is 5-0 in their last five games, 9-25 in game three of a series, and 7-2 in Arrieta’s last nine starts. Miami is 7-3 in game three of a series, 15-37 against the NL Central, and 4-0 Alvarez’s last four starts. Miami is 3-8 in the last 10 meetings of these two.
The Cubs won the first two in this series with their top two arms but reality sets in here and the Marlins should win big.
