The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers square off on Sunday Night Baseball at Comerica Park.
The Red Sox looked as if they were finally on the right track a week ago and ready to make a run at the top spot in the American League East but just like that their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse. Boston has dropped five in a row following an 8-6 defeat at Detroit on Saturday where both the bats and arms continued to struggle. Jon Lester took the loss with five runs plated on 12 hits in 4.1 innings with three relievers each allowing a run. Boston totaled 15 hits with Dustin Pedroia homering and knocking in two with David Ortiz also driving in two. Boston scored twice in the 9th and had the tying runs on but couldn't capitalize. Veteran John Lackey takes the mound in the final game of the series with the Tigers. Lackey has been red hot the past three times out where he is 1-1 with 1.27 ERA.

The Tigers are trying to emerge from their recent slide intact and have taken a few steps in the right direction. Detroit had lost five in a row where the offense has been a no show before back to back contests versus visiting Boston with 14 runs scored. Starter Max Scherzer wasn't sharp but he did limit the damage with four runs plated on eleven hits through 6.2 frames. He didn't need to be sharp with the bats pounding out 16 hits including homers by Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suarez. Altogether eight players knocked in runs. Anibal Sanchez draws the start in the final game of the series with the Red Sox. Sanchez has been one of the best in the Tigers rotatiion and has not allowed more then two runs in nine outings.
Boston almost pulled Saturday's game out but sometimes things don't work out when when struggling. I'm favoring Detroit but I won't lay the chalk...
