The San Diego Padres look to eve their series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.
The Padres have gotten decent pitching in 2014 but their bats have not given their arms much to work with. That makes winning a difficult task and impossible if the pitching also struggles. That was the case in a 5-2 defeat at Philadelphia in the series opener. Ian Kennedy saw his hot streak end with all five runs scored on seven hits in seven innings. The offense posted five hits with Will Venable cracking his second homer with Yonder Alonso hitting a sacrifice fly. San Diego sends Tyson Ross to the bump in game two of their series at Philadelphia. Ross is 6-5 on the season with a 3.22 ERA over 13 outings.

It is a rare sight to see the Philadelphia offense put up some runs even rarer to get their pitching on the same page. That's what we saw Wednesday and something that needs to happen a lot if the team is to save their season. AJ Burnett ended his mini slide with both runs plated on three hits through 7.1 frames to improve to 4-5. The Phillies totaled nine hits with the big blow being a 4th inning grand slam off the bat of Marlon Byrd with Chase Utley driving in a 7th inning run as the Phillies won for just the third time in ten contests. Lefty Cole Hamels faces San Diego Wednesday hoping to duplicate his last perfomance in a victory over Cincinnati. Hamels defeated the Reds 8-0 with 7.2 scoreless innings.
Look at what each team has done over the past few weeks and there is no real edge to exploit. I think the Phillies have a little more offense so....
