The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres face off on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia as they close out their series.
The Philadelphia Phillies have had their ups and downs this season and on Wednesday they had one of their highs as they won with a walk-off home run in the ninth inning. Reid Brignac hit the three run home run and Ben Revere, Jimmy Rollins, and Ryan Howard each had hits as the Phillies scored three runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed five hits and struck out 11 over 8.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Jonathan Papelbon got the win to go to 2-1 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Phillies start Kyle Kendrick who is coming off of a loss in his last start. For the season Kendrick has allowed 78 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 44 over 75.1 innings for a 1-6 record and a 4.30 ERA.

The San Diego Padres couldn’t get the bats going on Wednesday as they lost to the Phillies once again. Chris Denorfia, Chase Headley, and Cameron Maybin each had hits as the Padres failed to score a run on five hits. Starting pitcher Tyson Ross allowed four hits and struck out seven over 7.0 innings to get a no decision as Nick Vincent took the loss. For Thursday’s game the Padres start Eric Stults who has lost his last four decisions. For the season Stults has allowed 88 hits and 41 earned runs while striking out 34 over 65 innings for a 2-7 record and a 5.68 ERA.
Philadelphia is 3-8 in their last 11 games, 1-5 in game three of a series, and 8-3 in Kendrick’s last 11 starts as a favorite. San Diego is 2-7 in their last nine games, 1-5 in game three of a series, and 1-4 in Stults’ last five starts. San Diego is 1-5 in their last six games in Philadelphia.
We have tow pitchers who haven’t had much success but the Phillies have looked like the better team in this series and they are my pick here in what is a lean.
