The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates finish up their four-game series on Thursday.
Despite losing three of their last four games, the Cubs have been getting the job done this month, winning six of their first 10 games overall. The reason for the turnaround has been a Cubs offense that has scored four or more runs in five of their last eight games. The Cubs are known as one of the worst offense teams in baseball, but are 21-7 when scoring more than three runs. Pitching wise, the Cubs have an ERA of 3.62, which is ninth in the league. Getting the nod is Jeff Samardzija, who is 2-5 with a 2.54 ERA and has 75 strikeouts in 85 innings. Samardzija is 4-3 with a 1.90 ERA in 19 career games against the Pirates.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pirates have won two of the first three games against the Cubs, but have lost four of their last seven overall. The Pirates are just looking for some consistency, especially from their pitching staff that has allowed three or less runs in seven of their last 10 games. The Pirates have a solid staff, but have a season ERA of 3.88. Andrew McCutchen has homered in three straight games and has 12 RBI in his last 10 games. Edinson Volquez takes the hill, and he’s 3-5 with a 4.27 ERA and has 48 strikeouts in 71.2 innings. Volquez is 5-0 with a 3.60 ERA in nine career games against the Cubs.
The Cubs are 7-19 in Samardzija's last 26 starts and 2-7 in Samardzija's last 9 road starts. The Pirates are 1-4 in their last 5 during game 4 of a series and 12-5 in their last 17 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cubs are 0-5 in Samardzija's last 5 starts vs. Pirates.
Despite having a solid season, the Cubs just don't help out Samardzija when he pitches. When you add that to the fact he hasn't been great against the Pirates, I'll take the home team for the sweet price.
