The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies will play game two of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.
The Cubs have won seven of their last 11 games but continue to struggle mightily on the offensive side of the ball. As it’s been the case for much of the season, the Cubs have scored three or less runs in five of their last six games. In Friday’s win, the Cubs managed to score two runs on four hits and struck out 10 times. Anthony Rizzo has eight RBI in his last nine games and the Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 3.65. Getting the nod is Edwin Jackson, who is 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA and has 73 strikeouts in 74.2 innings. Jackson is 1-5 with a 5.60 ERA in six career starts against the Phillies.
USA TODAY Sports
The Phillies have lost nine of their last 13 games and are getting horrible production from their pitching staff. The Phillies have an ERA of 4.07, and have allowed four or more runs in 10 of their last 15 games. That’s not good for a Phillies offense that is ranked 24th in runs scored. Ryan Howard hasn’t homered in 11 straight games, but Chase Utley does have nine hits in his last 10 games. Taking the hill is David Buchanan, who is 1-3 with a 6.08 ERA and has 16 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. This is Buchannan’s first career game against the Cubs.
The Cubs are 7-19 in Jackson's last 26 starts and 5-16 in Jackson's last 21 starts as a road underdog. The Phillies are 3-7 in their last 10 games vs. a right-handed starter and 3-7 in their last 10 vs. National League Central.
Neither team has played well this season, but Jackson is a veteran pitcher who usually does well in these situations. I'll take a chance with the Cubs for the plus money.
