The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Thursday as they close out their NL Central series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates fell behind early on Wednesday and they were never able to catch up as they fell to the Reds at PNC Park. Gregory Polanco had two hits and Starling Marte and Jose Tabata each had hits as the Pirates scored four runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed six hits and eight earned runs while striking out two over 2.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-6 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start Jeff Locke who is looking for his first win of the year. For the season Locke has allowed 18 hits and nine runs while striking out 17 over 20.1 innings for a 0-1 record and a 3.98 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds got back to .500 for the season as the knocked off the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Billy Hamilton had three hits and Brandon Phillips, Skip Schumaker, and Zack Cozart each had two hits as the Reds scored 11 runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Alfredo Simon continued to impress as he allowed five hits and three runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings to get the win and go to 10-3 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Reds start Homer Bailey who has won his last four decisions, For the season Bailey has allowed 93 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 76 over 84.2 innings for a 7-3 record and a 4.68 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 2-6 when their opponent scored five or more runs in their previous game, 21-51 after losing the first two games of a series, and 0-4 in Locke’s last four home starts. Cincinnati is 7-1 in their last eight games, 4-1 as an underdog, and 4-12 in Bailey’s last 16 starts as an underdog. Cincinnati has won the last six meetings of these two.
