The Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers face off on Sunday in Anaheim on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
The Los Angeles Angels have one of the best records in baseball and they improved on it on Saturday beating the Rangers in extra innings. Hank Conger had two hits and Josh Hamilton and Howie Kendrick had hits as the Angels scored three runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Jered Weaver allowed four hits and a run while striking out five over 8.0 innings for a no decision as Kevin Jepson blew the save and Mike Morin got the win to go to 1-1 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Angels start Matt Shoemaker what has alternated between starting and relief in his last four appearances. For the season Shoemaker has allowed 39 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 45 over 42.1 innings for a 4-1 record and a 3.83 ERA.

The Texas Rangers battled back to tie the Angels in the ninth inning on Saturday but it wasn’t good enough as they lost in extra innings. Shin-Soo Choo hit a home run and drove in two runs as Adrian Bltre and Alex Rios each had hits as the Rangers scored two runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Nicholas Martinez allowed three hits and two runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Neil Cotts took the loss to fall to 2-4 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Rangers start Yu Darvish who lost his last start after winning his four prior starts. For the season Darvish has allowed 77 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 109 over 90.1 innings for a 7-3 record and a 2.39 ERA.
Los Angeles is 5-1 against the AL West, 21-8 in their last 29 home games, and 6-1 in Shoemaker’s last seven starts. Texas is 0-5 in their last five road games, 2-7 following a loss, and 13-3 in Darvish’s last 16 starts as a favorite. Texas is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings of these two.
