The St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Sunday at Busch Stadium as they close out their series.
The St. Louis Cardinals continue to chase the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and they kept pace on Saturday as they beat the Phillies. Yadier Molina scored twice, Matt Adams knocked in two RBI’s, and Matt Holliday had a hit and drove in a run as the Cards scored four runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed six hits and a run while striking out seven over 8.0 innings to get the win and go to 10-3 for the season and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 21st save. For Sunday’s game St. Louis starts Carlos Martinez who has worked both as a starter and from the bullpen this season. For the year Martinez has allowed 33 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 31 over 38.2 innings for a 0-3 record and a 4.19 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies battled back early to tie Saturday’s game against the Cardinals but they couldn’t do it again as they took the loss. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Domonic Brown each had hits as the Phillies scored one run on six hits. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out eight over 7.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-4 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Phillies start Kyle Kendrick who has picked up wins in his last two starts. For the season Kendrick has allowed 91 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 55 over 88.1 innings for a 3-6 record and a 3.97 ERA.
St. Louis is 60-23 against a team with a losing record, 1-10 in game four of a series, and 6-2 in their last eight Sunday games. Philadelphia is 5-1 in their last six road games, 5-0 against a right-handed starter, and 3-9 in Kendrick’s last 12 road starts. Philadelphia is 6-2 in Kendrick’s last eight games against St. Louis.
I have been on the Phillies for every game this series and that doesn’t change here with this pitching matchup.
