The Tampa Bay Rays hope to even their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Tropicana Field on Tuesday.
If the Pirates can avoid any type of losing streak going forward they appear to finally be the team we've come to know the last few years. The Buccos reached the .500 mark on the strength of an 8-1 victory at Tampa Bay Monday for their 4th win in five contests. Edinson Volquez was at his best with the lone run plated in the first in an eight inning performance. Pedro Alvarez led a ten hit attack with a three run homer while Andrew McCutchen knocked in two and scored twice. Pittsburgh is hoping for another strong effort on the mound from Jeff Locke when he faces Tampa Bay in his 3rd start of 2014. Locke is 0-1 in fouur outings with a 3.76 ERA.

Tampa Bay is one team that needs a long hot streak and several of them just to reach .500. Doable...yes but I would need to see it to believe it because stringing wins together is something the Rays have not done in 2014. That trend continued in Monday's defeat with both the arms and bats struggling. Alex Cobb was charged with six runs on six hits and a trio of free passes through five frames with Kirby Yates giving up two more. That was trouble for a team that has had issues at the plate. The bats mustered six hits with James Loney doubling in Desmond Jennings. Chris Archer toes the rubber versus visiting Pittsburgh on Tuesday night looking to continue his hot work on the mound. In his last three starts Archer has gone 1-1 with a 0.56 ERA.
Archer is a handful when throwing well and he is better then Locke but I like the Pirates bats more then the Rays. The bottom line for me is the huge juice on a team that has struggled to hit so it's walk away or something small on the visitors...
