The Milwaukee Brewers and the Washington Nationals face off on Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee after playing a 16-inning marathon on Tuesday.
The Milwaukee Brewers battled for 16 innings on Tuesday but in the end they wound up on the short end of the scoreboard losing to the Nats. Ryan Braun had two hits and Scooter Gennett, Aramis Ramirez, and Khris Davis each had hits as the Brewers scored two runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo allowed four hits and a run while striking out five over 6.0 innings to not get a decision as Will Smith blew the save and Mike Fiers took the loss pitching four innings. For Wednesday’s game the Brewers start Marco Estrada who won his last start. For the season Estrada has allowed 87 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 81 over 89.2 innings for a 6-4 record and a 5.22 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Nationals continued their strong play as they outlasted the Brewers on Tuesday to get the win. Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon each had three hits including a home run and Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond each had two hits as the Nationals scored four runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman allowed six hits and two runs while striking out nine over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Tyler Clippard got the win to go to 5-2 for the season and Rafael Soriano earned his 18th save. For Wednesday’s game the Nationals start Stephen Strasburg who has a no decision and a loss in his last two starts. For the season Strasburg has allowed 103 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 121 over 100 innings for a 6-5 record and a 3.24 ERA.
Milwaukee is 4-1 as an underdog, 1-5 in their last six home games, 1-4 in Estrada’s last five home starts against a team with a winning record. Washington is 6-2 in their last eight games, 2-4 in their last six road games, and 5-2 in Strasburg’s last seven starts against a team with a winning record. Washington is 5-1 in the last six meetings of these two.
The Nationals are red hot but neither team is going to have much pitching depth after Tuesday and it looks like a coin flip so the home dog is my play here.
