The New York Mets head to PNC Park to tangle with the Pittsburgh Pirates in Thursday action.
Even though the Mets are below .500 they are right in the midst of the National League East race with neither Washington or Atlanta able to pull away. That means the opportunity is there to make up some ground and give themselves a chance. The Mets didn't give themselves a chance in an 8-5 loss to visiting Oakland with Zack Wheeler giving up six runs in inly two innings. The offense made a late charge on Lucas Duda's three run bomb and Chris Youngs two run homer but it was too little, too late. Veteran Daisuke Matsuzaka takes the ball in the series opener versus the Mets. Matsuzaka has been strong through five starts with a 3-1 record and a 2.68 ERA.

The Pirates are playing well and need to keep playing well to be a factor in the National League Central conversation. Pittsburgh saw a four game winning streak end with a 5-1 defeat at Tampa Bay with both the arms and bats having a tough go of it. Charlie Morton deserved a better fate with three runs allowed (two earned) through seven innings but Jason Grilli sealed the loss with a pair of runs scored in the 8th. That was too much for the Buccos offense that mustered five hits with Andrew McCutchen's solo homer being the lone bright spot. Right hander Vance Worley will be on the mound for his third start of 2014. Worley has been solid in his two outings with a 1-0 record and 1.98 ERA.
Pittsburgh is the better team and probably win this but I won't lay the big chalk on Worley who is making his third start. I'd rather walk away or play the Mets small...
