The New York Mets continue their series at PNC Park with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.
The Mets don't have the greatest record and sometimes struggle to get their pitching and offense going. They are still in the National League East race but need better work on the mound and at the plate to be a factor in the division going forward. The Mets received neither in a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh Thursday as Daisuke Matsuzaka suffered the defeat with all five runs scored over six frames. The bats recorded nine hits with Lucas Duda going deep and David Wright rapping an RBI double. The Mets turn to Jacob deGrom in game two of their series at Pittsburgh. deGrom threw a five hit shutout at the Pirates in the first meeting but did not receive a decision in a 5-3 defeat.

Pittsburgh is on the march towards .500 with an eye towards bigger things as in the National League Central title. The Pirates have a ways to go but in winning six of eight they have been getting the hitting and pitching needed to challenge the division powers and need both going forward. The Buccos got both Thursday with Vance Worley giving up a homerun over seven innings to get the win. The Pirates managed eight hits and five walks with Gregory Polanco going deep and knocking in four. Brandon Cumpton toes the rubber against the Mets for the second time this season. Cumpton is hoping to duplicate his last outing where he tossed a two hit shutout over seven frames of a 2-1 win at the Cubs.
We haven't seen enough from either pitcher to say one has a distinct advantage over the other so I'm going with the better offense and hotter team...
