The New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates will play game three of four on Saturday afternoon.
Right when it looked like the Mets were turning the corner, they’ve now lost three straight games are back to eight games below .500. The lack of offense has hurt the Mets in this series, as they’ve scored just two runs in each of the first two games. This has been a problem for the Mets all year and it doesn’t help that David Wright isn’t playing with a shoulder injury. Pitching, the Mets have the 10th best ERA at 3.59. Jonathon Niese gets the nod, and he’s 4-4 with a 2.78 ERA and has 69 strikeouts in 97 innings. Niese is 2-1 with a 4.40 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates.
The Pirates have won seven of their last nine games and are two games above .500. While the Pirates are usually bashed for a lack of offense, they have produced four or more runs in seven of their last 11 games. Andrew McCutchen has seven RBI in his last nine games and the Pirates have won 20 of their last 22 games when scoring more than three runs. The Pirates have 17th best ERA at 3.83. Gerrit Cole starts, and he’s 6-3 with a 3.64 ERA and has 69 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. This is Cole’s second career start against the Mets.
The Mets are 13-5 in Nieses last 18 Saturday starts and 1-5 in Nieses last 6 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Pirates are 5-0 in Coles last 5 starts as a favorite and 6-1 in Coles last 7 home starts. The Mets are 4-1 in Nieses last 5 starts vs. Pirates.
We could see a rusty Cole with him fresh off the DL, which is why I see value with the Mets. Niese has been solid for the most part and the Mets bats have woken up lately. Give me the road team for the value.
