The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox face off on Sunday Night in the Bronx for the rubber match of their series on ESPN.
The New York Yankees took game one of their series against the Red Sox on Friday but on Saturday they paid the price for a bad pitch and lost to the Red Sox in a tight game. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and Derek Jeter and Brett Gardener each had hits as the Yankees scored just one run on five hits. Starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out eight over 9.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 11-3 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Yankees start Chase Whitley who is coming off of his first loss of the season. For the season Whitley has allowed 47 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 28 over 42 innings for a 3-1 record and a 4.07 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox kept Saturday’s game against the Yankees tight all the way until the ninth inning when they came through in the clutch getting the win. Mike Napoli hit a two strike pitch for the game winning home run, Dustin Pedroia had three hits, and David Ortiz had a hit as the Red Sox scored two runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jon Lester allowed five hits and a run while striking out six over 8.0 innings to get the win and go to 9-7 for the season and Koji Uehara earned his 17th save. For Sunday’s game the Red Sox start John Lackey who was shelled last time out in Seattle lasting just 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs. For the season Lackey has allowed 107 hits and 41 earned runs while striking out 93 over 107 innings for an 8-5 record and a 3.45 ERA.
New York is 5-2 as a home favorite, 0-4 in their last four Sunday games, and 6-2 in Whitley’s last eight starts. Boston is 3-6 in their last nine games, 3-7 in their last 10 road games, and 2-6 in Lackey’s last eight starts as a road underdog. Boston is 2-5 in their last seven games in New York.
The games this series have been low scoring but I look for both teams to get it all out of their system here and I like the over 8.5 with my free pick. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
