The San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Thursday in San Francisco as the finish their series.
The San Francisco Giants have been bouncing back from a rough stretch but on Wednesday they never got it going as they lost to the Cardinals. Joe Panik had two hits and Hunter Pence and Tyler Colvin each had hits as the Giants failed to score on five hits. Starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong allowed six hits and two runs while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 5-5 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Giants start Madison Bumgarner who is coming off of a loss in his last start. For the season Bumgarner has allowed 101 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 114 over 108.2 innings for a 9-5 record and a 2.90 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in a tailspin but they got a temporary reprieve on Wednesday getting the win in San Francisco. Matt Carpenter had three hits, Matt Holliday had 2 hits, and Yadier Molina had a hit as the Cardinals scored two runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed four hits and struck out one over 7.2 innings to get the win to go to 11-4 for the season and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 25th save. For Thursday’s game the Cardinals start Carlos Martinez who has two no decisions and a win in his last three starts. For the season Martinez has allowed 42 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 40 over 48 innings for a 1-3 record and a 4.12 ERA.
San Francisco is 5-17 in their last 22 games, 3-9 in their last 12 games as a favorite, and 2-5 in Bumgarner’s last seven home starts. St. Louis is 30-12 in game three of a series, 2-4 in their last six games as an underdog, and 5-2 in their last seven road games against a tem with a winning home record. St. Louis is 3-5 in the last eight meetings of these two.
This game looks like a coin flip so in that case I will take the odds and my chances.
