The Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees face off on Friday at Target Field for game two of their series.
The Minnesota Twins continued their struggles on Thursday as they fell to the Yankees at home. Brian Dozier and Sam Fuld had two hits each and Kurt Suzuki added a hit as the Twins scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes didn’t have a lot of success against his old team allowing eight hits and seven runs while striking out six over 6.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-5 for the season. For Friday’s game the Twins start Kyle Gibson who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Gibson has allowed 85 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 50 over 93 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.77 ERA.

The New York Yankees are still very much in the AL East race and they helped their cause on Thursday beating the Twins. Zelous Wheeler had two hits including a home run, Carlos beltran hit a home run and drove in three runs, and Mark Teixeira and Ichiro Suzuki had two hits each the Yankees scored seven runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings o get the win to go to 12-3 on the season and David Robertson earned his 19th save. For Friday’s game the Yankees start Chase Whitley who has lost his last two starts. For the season whitley has allowed 55 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 29 over 46 innings for a 3-2 record and a 4.70 ERA.
Minnesota is 4-1 as a home favorite, 5-3 in their last eight home games, and 5-1 in Gibson’s last sox starts in game two of a series. New York is 2-4 in their last six road games, 1-5 in their alst six games as an underdog, and 5-1 in Whitley’s last six road starts. New York is 38-15 in their last 53 games in Minnesota.
The Yankees are just the better team here and while I see Gibson being the better pitcher right now, it isn’t enough for me to take the Twins.
