The Philadelphia Phillies just couldn’t get any offense going on Friday as they fell to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Chase Utley and Ben Revere had hits and Jimmy Rollins was among those getting a walk but the Phillies scored just two runs on two hits. Starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez allowed 10 hits and five runs while striking out three over 5.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-8 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Phillies start David Buchanan who is coming off of a loss that ended a three game winning streak. For the season Buchanan has allowed 49 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 31 over 46.1 innings for a 4-4 record and a 4.86 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 10-3 in their last 13 games, 7-2 in their last nine home games, and 1-5 in Volquez’s last six starts in game two of a series. Philadelphia is 5-2 in game two of a series, 1-7 in their last eight games, and 0-7 against a team with a winning record.
I like Buchannan a bunch but the Pirates are just hot right now and are looking like a team that is going to do what it takes to make the post season and that means winning here.
