The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Sunday in Washington as they close out their weekend series.
The Washington nationals lost Friday’s series opener to the Cubs but came back with a fury on Saturday pounding Chicago for the win. Ryan Zimmerman had four hits and Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth had three hits each as the Nationals scored 13 runs on 19 hits. Starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez allowed four hits and struck out seven over 8.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 6-4 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Nationals start Jordan Zimmerman who hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his last six starts. For the season Zimmerman has allowed 104 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 91 over 103.2 innings for a 6-4 record and a 2.95 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs had no answers offensively nor defensively on Saturday as they were bludgeoned by the Nationals. Justin Ruggiano had two hits and Starlin Castro and Wellington Castillo had hits as the Cubs failed to score on five hits. Carlos Villanueva allowed five hits and four runs over just 2.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-6 for the season but Christopher Rusin was shelled for nine hits and five runs over 3.2 innings and Justin Grimm allowed five hits and four runs in just one inning as the Cubs pitching staff was simply pathetic. For Sunday’s game the Cubs start Jake Arrieta who has won his last four starts. For the season Arrieta has allowed 49 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 74 over 64.2 innings for a -1 record and a 1.81 ERA.
Washington is 6-1 in their last seven home games, 6-2 in game three of a series, and 25-10 in Zimmerman’s last 35 home starts. Chicago is 5-1 in their last six road games, 12-6 against the NL East, and 4-1 in Arrieta’s last five road starts.
This one should be close but the better team is usually the better play in a toss up and that is the Nationals here.
