The Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres face off on Monday at Coors Field for game one of their series of NL West bottom feeders.
The Colorado Rockies have struggled with injuries but mostly it has been mediocre on it’s best day pitching that has been their undoing. The Rockies are 21-22 at home, 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss on Sunday to the Dodgers. As a team the Rockies are hitting .282 with Troy Tulowitzki hitting .350, Justin Morneau hitting .316, and Charlie Blackmon hitting .291. The Colorado pitching staff has an ERA of 5.04 with the starters at 5.30 and the bullpen at 4.61. For game one against the padres the Rockies start Tyler Matzek who has lost his last two decisions. The San Diego Padres are being reminded once again that having a strong pitching staff is a nice asset but in order to win games you need to score runs and they haven’t been. The Padres are 15-24 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Padres are hitting .214 with Seth Smith hitting .273, Cameron Maybin hitting .263, and Tommy Medica hitting .241. The padres pitching staff has an ERA of 3.22 with the starters at 3.63 and the bullpen at 2.43. For game one against the Rockies San Diego starts Ian Kennedy who got the win in his last start. For the season Kennedy has allowed 107 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 116 over 109.1 innings for a 6-9 record and a 3.87 ERA.
Colorado is 15-38 in their last 53 games, 1-4 as a favorite, and 0-4 in Matzek’s last four starts. San Diego is 5-2 in their last seven games, 3-9 in their last 12 road games, and 1-4 in Kennedy’s last five road starts. San Diego is 4-11 in their last 15 games in Colorado.
I am not seeing much value on the favorites here so the play here is the Padres.
