The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Monday at Busch Stadium in game one of a pivotal NL Central series.
The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t been at their best of late as they are in third place in the National League Central standings. The Cardinals are 24-19 at home, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two. As a team the Cardinals are hitting .250 with Matt Adams hitting .328, Yadier Molina hitting .292, and Matt Carpenter hitting .282. The St. Louis pitching staff has at 3.28 ERA with the starters at 3.23 and the bullpen at 3.38. For game one against the Pirates the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Wainwright has allowed 87 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 106 over 124 innings for an 11-4 record and a 1.89 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Pirates are streaking into the All Star Break and they have their eyes dead set on being part of the post season once again. The Pirates are 18-21 on the road, 8-2 in their last 10 games, and they have won three in a row. As a team the Pirates are hitting .259 with Andrew McCutchen hitting .324, Neil Walker hitting .272, and Starling Marte hitting .258. The Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.74 with the starters at 3.92 and the bullpen at 3.39. For game one in St. Louis the Pirates start Charlie Morton who won last time out to end a personal two game losing skid. For the season Morton has allowed 93 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 89 over 106.1 innings for a 5-9 record and a 3.30 ERA.
St. Louis is 5-3 as a favorite, 4-1 against the NL Central, and 41-20 in Wainwright’s last 61 home starts. Pittsburgh is 7-1 in their last eight games, 4-1 in their last five road games, and 2-6 in Morton’s last eight road starts. Pittsburgh is 2-8 in their last 10 games in St. Louis.
The Cards are a huge favorite here because of Wainwright but the Pirates are playing the better baseball and I am going to take a shot on the Bucs at the big price.
