The Chicago Cubs battle the Cincinnati Reds in game one of their doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cubs have struggled offensivel for most of the first half of the season and the trade of two of their top hurlers says they are already looking forward to 2015. The Cubbies took one on the chin Monday in a 9-3 defeat with neither the arms and bats struggling. Edwin Jackson allowed four runs over six frames to take the loss with two relievers allowing five more. Chicago totaled eleven hits with Anthony Rizzo slamming a two run jack. Left hander Travis Wood gets rhe start in game one of the DH at Great American Ball Park. Wood is 7-6 overall with a 4.62 ERA over 17 outings.

In my view the time is now for Cincinnati to make a move in the National League Central because the division is simply too top heavy to do anything but win consistently. Cincinnati is at their best when the offense is pounding the ball and scoring which was exactly what they did Tuesday and a solid effort on the mound didn't hurt. Mike Leake gave up all three runa (two earned) on nine hits through seven innings. The bats produced ten hits and five walks that saw Billy Hamilton knock in four runs while Jay Bruce homered and drove in two. Cincinnati sends ace Johnny Cueto to the bump in the first game of a twin bill with the Cubs. Cueto has pitched better then his 8-6 record as a sub two ERA would indicate.
Wood has given the Reds some tough times but Cueto has been equally effective versus the Cubs so I'm just going with the better team...
