The battle to avoid the basement in the AL West continues between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.
The slumping Astros certainly haven't looked like the improved team I claimed they were as they had lost seven in a row to sit in the basement of the AL West. The Stros took a strp to get out of the cellar with a 12-7 victory at Texas behind a big night at the plate. Jarred Cosart picked up the win although he was awful with five runs plated in five frames. The offense saved him with a 17 hit attack that saw Jonathan Singleton homer and drive in four while Alex Presley and Marwin Gonzalez combine for five RBI's. The Astros hand the nall to Brad Peacock to face the Rangers for the second time in 2014. Peacock took the loss in that meeting with four runs scored in a 4-0 defeat.

The 4th place Rangers are slowly sliding down the American League West to the point where they are battling Houston to avoid the division basement. Texas didn't help their cause Monday with the work on the mound letting them down. Starter Miles Mikolas had a less then memorable debut with nine runs scored on 12 hits through 3.1 innings pitched. The Rangers offense did put up a fight on an eleven hit, three walk attack that saw Adrian Beltre homer and drive in two while Elvis Andrus led the way with three RBI's with three players driving in runs and seven scoring. Phillip Irwin gets the call to the mound for the second start of his career when he faces Houston on Tuesday. Irwin gave up five runs in 4.2 frames in his debut in 2013.
I am not fond of Peacock but Irwin is a complete mystery so this is aanother case of just going with what we know and hoping it works out...
