The Los Angeles Dodgers can extend their lead in the NL West with a win over the San Diego Padres.
The Padres have climbed to third in the NL West but that doesn't mean the team is playing well because they have dropped four of five heading in to Thursday's opener versus the Dodgers. Make that five of six as the Padres fell by a 2-1 count against Clayton Kershaw. Odrisamer Despaigne was spectacular in defeat with both runs plated over seven innings but Kershaw was still better with Chase Headley connecting on a solo homer as the only offense. San Diego turns to rookie Jessse Hahn on the hill who faces the Dodgers for the first time in his career. Hahn has gone 4-2 on the season over his six starts with a 2.34 ERA.

The Dodgers have slowly but surely closed the gap on San Francisco to take over the top spot in the National League West. Los Angeles had fallen in three of four with visiting San Diego locking horns in game two of their series. The Dodgers received another steller performance from Clayton Kershaw whose 41 inning scoreless streak ended although he still dominated with a complete game three hitter. The bats needed his help with nine hits not doing much damage. Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Van Slyke each singled in runs which gave the Dodgers the win and helped them pick up a game in the standings with the Giants losing. Veteran Dan Haren looks for a strong performance against visiting San Diego to extend the lead in the division. Haren is 8-5 with an ERA just north of four in 18 outings.
It's tough to go against Los Angeles right now especially with Hahn having little experience for the Padres. I suppose if San Diego is going to steal one this would be it but I wouldn't go big on this...
