The Washington Nationals make the short trip up the interstate to take the field with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Washington is in a virtual dead heat for supremacy in the NL East but need to keep winning with the Braves ready to take over should they falter. The Nationals had been getting great hitting and pitching in winning eight of ten before both fell short in a 4-3 defeat at Baltimore on Thursday. Gio Gonzalez allowed four early runs (three earned) on six hits over 6.2 frames to fall to 6-5. The offense had their chances on ten hits and a BB with Jayson Werth going solo while Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond rapped RBI hits. Jordan Zimmermann looks to continue his hot work on the mound when he faces the Phillies for the second time in 2014. Zimmermann has posted seven straight quality outings including three shutouts.

Philadelphia hasn't had much to cheer about in 2014 and the season numbers look even worse when considering the National League East hasn't been an extremely tough division. Just as trade talks begin to swirl around the Phillies they rattle off four straight wins after a 9-1 rout of Milwaukee on Thursday. The Phils did nothing offensively untik a seven run 8th to secure the road sweep of the Brewers. Rookie David Buchanan allowed the lone run through seven innings to improve to 5-5. Ryan Howard homered and drove in three with Jimmy Rollins, Cody Asche and Domonic Brown knocking in two runs each. The suddenly hot Phillies send veteran AJ Burnett to the bump looking for 8th straight quality start.
The Phillies have been finding ways to win lately but they are the inferior team. I do think they have a puncher's chance if Burnett holds up but that could be the Philly fan in me talking...
