The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers face off on Saturday in K.C. for game three of their series of AL Central teams.
The Kansas City Royals had their share of chances on Friday but couldn’t convert on enough of them as they fell to the Tigers for the second consecutive night. Eric Hosmer had three hits and Norichika Aoki, Salvador Perez, and Omar Infante each had two hits as the Royals scored just once on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Danny Duffy allowed five hits and two runs, one of them earned, and he struck out six over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 5-9 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Royals start James Shields who has won four of his last five decisions. For the season Shields has allowed 132 hits and 51 earned runs while striking out 102 over 123.2 innings for a 9-4 record and a 3.71 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers didn’t get a lot of offense on Friday but they made it hold up as they beat the Royals. Austin Jackson had three hits and Ian Kinsler and Rajai Davis each had hits as the Tigers scored two runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez allowed eight hits and a run while striking out three over 7.0 innings to get the win to raise his record to 6-3 and Joe Nathan earned his 19th save. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Rick Porcello who is coming off of a loss that ended a streak for him of three wins. For the season Porcello has allowed 107 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 64 over 112.1 innings for an 11-5 record and a 3.53 ERA.
Kansas City is 2-6 in their last eight games, 1-6 as a home favorite, and 3-12 in Shields’ last 42 starts. Detroit is 7-0 against the AL Central, 17-5 in their last 22 games, and 23-8 I Porcello’s last 31 starts. Detroit has won six in a row in Kansas City.
There wasn’t much scoring on Friday but I expect them to make up for it here as this one goes over the total. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
