The Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals face off on Saturday in Philadelphia for game two of their series.
The Philadelphia Phillies jumped all over the Nationals early on Friday and never looked back coasting to the win. Jimmy Rollins hit two home runs and Chase Utley and Marlon Byrd each had two hits as the Phillies scored six run on 10 hits. Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six over 7.2 innings to get the win and raise his record to 6-8 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Phillies start Cole Hamels who is coming off of a win in his last start. For the season Hamels has allowed 88 hits and 32 earned runs while striking out 101 over 100.1 innings for a 3-5 record and a 2.87 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Nationals never got the offense in gear on Friday and they were never close in the game taking the loss. Bryce Harper hit a home run, Denard Span had two hits, and Adam LaRoche and Ryan Zimmerman each had hits as the Nationals scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman lasted just 3.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs and striking out five to take the loss and fall to 6-5 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Nats start Stephen Strasburg who had a no decision in his last start. For the season Strasburg has allowed 120 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 140 over 119.1 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.47 ERA.
Philadelphia is 5-0 in their last five starts, 2-6 against the NL East, and 5-2 in Hamels’ last seven starts. Washington is 8-4 in their last 12 games, 4-1 in game two of a series, and 1-4 in Strasburg’s last five starts. Washington is 11-5 in their last 16 games against Philadelphia.
This one looks like a coin flip so I will look for some value on the home underdog Phillies.
