The Los Angeles Dodgers look to make up ground in the NL West with a win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
San Diego has shown some life in reaching third in the NL West but they have been struggling over the past week or so with two wins in their last seven contests. It was more of the same Saturday with the offense not making a sound in a 1-0 loss at Dodgers Stadium. Starter Ian Kennedy was spectacular with a three hit shutout over eight frames before Kevin Quakenbush gave up the wining run on a sac fly in the 9th. The offense mustered just five singles and didn't threaten. Tyson Ross takes the mound for the third time versus the Dodgers on the season Sunday. Ross has a 2.93 ERA but is only 7-9 as he sometimes struggles to get support.

The Dodgers stay in first in the National League West didn't last long but they are in a virtual tie for the division lead given half of the season has yet to be played. Having said that, every win is important in a race that could go down to the wire and the Dodgers got a big one Saturday with San Francisco losing. Lefty Paul Maholm made a rare starting appearance and came up big with the offense struggling. Maholm tossed a two hit shutout through six frames with three relievers keeping the Padres off the scoreboard with Kenley Jansen picking up his first victory. Adrian Gonzalez opened the 9th with a double and scored on a sac fly from AJ Ellis. Hyun-Jin Ryu takes the ball against the Padres for his 3rd outing versus their NL West rivals. Ryu is coming in off of his poorest start of 2014 where he gave up seven runs over 2.1 frames of a 14-5 loss at Detroit.
I think Ross can match Ryu on the mound but his offense might not because they are not scoring again. I think this is another game decided by a run so again I'm riding the dog or walking away...
