The Philadelphia Phillies battled back on Saturday but lost in extra innings falling to the Nationals. Marlon Byrd and Ben Revere had two hits each and Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins had hits as the Phillies scored three runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed four hits and three runs while striking out five over 7.0 innings to not get a decision as Jake Diekman took the loss to fall to 3-3 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Phillies start Kyle Kendrick who won last time out to end a two decision losing streak. For the season Kendrick has allowed 125 hits and 57 earned runs while striking out 71 over 115 innings for a 4-8 record and a 4.46 ERA.

The Washington Nationals continue to head into the All Star break with momentum as the beat the Phillies in extra innings on Saturday. Jayson Werth hit a home run, Ian Desmond had two hits, and Ryan Zimmerman had a hit as the Nationals scored five runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out nine over 5.1 innings to not get a decision as Tyler Clippard blew the save, Ross Detweiler got the win to raise his record to 1-2, and Rafael Soriano earned his 22nd save. For Sunday’s game the Nationals start Tanner Roark who has lost his last two starts. For the season Roark has allowed 100 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 79 over 106.2 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.12 ERA.
Philadelphia is 5-1 in their last six games, 2-7 against the NL East, and 3-8 in Kendrick’s last 11 starts in game three of a series. Washington is 7-3 in game three of a series, 52-24 as a road favorite, and 7-3 in Roark’s last 10 starts against the NL East. Washington is 12-6 in their last 18 games against Philadelphia.
