The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners finish off the first half of the season with a bout at Safeco Field.
Oakland is going to be sitting atop the American League West at the end of the first half of 2014 with both their pitching and offense putting together a solid year thus far. The offense struggled and the pen followed suit in a 6-2 loss at Seattle on Saturday. Jesse Chavez gave up three runs on ten hits over 5.2 frames to take the loss with Jim Johnson serving up a three run bomb in the 8th. The offense was silent until Brandon Moss clubbed a two run homer in the 9th to score John Jaso but it was too little, too late. Sonny Gray shoots for his 10th win of 2014 when he faces Seattle on Sunday. Gray has gone 9-3 with a 2.97 ERA covering 18 outings where Oakland has gone 12-6 in his outings.

The Mariners have been holding their own in the top heavy AL West as the currently are third behind the Angels and Athletics. The team needs improved work on the mound and at the plate to close the gap on these teams and they received both Saturday. Hisashi Iwakuma came up big on the mound with a two run homer with two outs ruining both a shutout and complete game. The offense pounded out 14 hits and walked three times with Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager slamming long balls and knocking in all five runs. The Mariners send Chris Young to the bump to face the Athletics in the final game of the first half of 2014. Young has had a solid campaign thus far with an 8-5 record and 3.08 ERA over 17 starts.
Oakland isthe better team with the better hurler so they seem like the logical choice but Young has been pretty good himself so I would rather take the big home dog or walk away...
