The New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Friday as they resume play after the All Star break with game one of their interleague series.
The New York Yankees are still very much in the hunt for a spot in the post season but they are going to need a strong finish. For game one against the Reds the Yankees start David Phelps who hasn’t had a decision in his last four starts. For the season Phelps has allowed 86 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 76 over 89 innings for a 3-4 record and a 3.94 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds are climbing the standings in the NL Central as it looks like for the second year in a row it should come right down to the final games of the season. The Reds are 24-23 on the road this season, 7-3 in their last 10 games, and they are 1.5 games behind the Brewers. As a team the Reds are hitting .249 with Todd Frazier hitting .290, Billy Hamilton is hitting .285, and Brandon Phillips is hitting .272. The Reds pitching staff has an ERA of 3.46 with the starters at 3.31 and the bullpen at 3.84. For game one at Yankee Stadium the Reds start Mike Leake who has won four of his last five decisions. For the season Leake has allowed 130 hits and 50 earned runs while striking out 97 over 127 innings for a 7-7 record and 3.54 ERA.
New York is 5-2 following an off day, 7-3 in their last 10 interleague games, and 9-3 in Phelps’ last 12 home starts. Cincinnati is 5-0 following an off day, 7-2 in their last nine games, and 4-11 in their last 15 interleague road games.
