The Colorado Rockies take to the road to open a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday night.
The Rockies fall from grace in the National League West was quick and hard as they went from a contender with a winning record to 4th. To be fair the team has suffered a number of injuries but in all honesty we have seen the same type of thing happen to this team before aand injuries were not always to blame. The generally strong offense has not always been strong and the work on the mound has never been a real strength so if there are no runs to work with the pitching struggles to win. At 15 games below .500 I believe the Rockies are spoilers and will give a few players a chance to show their stuff. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa takes the ball at Pittsburgh riding a four game winning streak. De La Rosa is 10-6 with a 4.56 ERA.

The Pirates have at least rebounded far enough from a slow start to bring their record to three games above .500 and well within striking distance in the National League Central. The issue as I see it with this team is they can be a bit streaky and possibly inconsitent. Winning four of five and then losing three in a row isn't going to make the cut in the top heavy division where every team but the Cubs are contenders. The difference for the Buccos could be how well they perform coming out of the break and if a rotation that includes Vance Worley, Liriano and a now injured Gerrit Cole can survive. Left hander Francisco Liriano toes the rubber against the dangerous offense of Colorado. Liriano has been unable to find any kind of groove this season with a 1-7 record in 15 outings wher the team has gone 7-8.
I am baffled by Liriano and De La Rosa away from home is not good. Taking Pitt as the better team is the logical choice if you can stomach the juice but I doubt I would take either...
