The top teams in the East and West collide Saturday when the Baltimore Orioles battle the Oakland Athletics.
Baltimore sits atop the American League East although their lead isn't huge and far from secure. The Orioles pitching has been above average in winning seven of ten going in to the All Star break but that trend was broken in a 5-4 defeat on Friday. Chris Tillman was outstanding with a pair of runs plated over 6.2 innings before Zach Britton gave up a walkoff three run homer in the 9th. Manny Machado and Jonathan schoop each clubbed two run bombs as the Birds rallied from a 2-0 hole. Left hander Wei-Yin Chen faces the dangerous Oakland attack for the second time this season. Chen has gone 9-3 in 2014 with a 4.15 ERA over 18 starts.

Oakland is probably the best team in the American League and in the majors as well but they still have the Angels breathing down their neck so they must keep racking up the wins with Los Angeles refusing to lose. The A's did their part in the series opener with the Orioles thanks to Josh Donaldson's three run 9th inning blast to erase a 4-2 deficit. Derek Norris went solo as well to get starter Jeff Samardzija off the hook. Samardzija looked to be heading for the loss with a pair of two run homers given up before Donaldson's heroics gave him a no decision. Jason Hammel toes the rubber for the second time as a member of the Athletics. Hammel's first outing turned out to be a 5-3 loss to San Francisco where he gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings.
Hammel has got the better overall numbers but Chen just wins. I personally believe both will eventually fade so betting either is a bit scary so I'll go with the better odds...
