The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks conclude their weekend at Chase Field on Sunday.
If you are a fan of the game you are well aware that the Cubs have generally been a non factor in the National League Central for a number of years and 2014 is not going to be any different with inconsistent pitching and a struggling offense to blame. The bats and arms had issues once again in a 9-3 loss at Arizona Saturday. Starter Travis Wood was charged with seven runs (five earned) over 5.1 frames while the ten hit attack of the offense came up short. Welington Castillo launched his 7th homer with Mike Olt and Starlin Castro rapping RBI singles. The Cubs are scheduled to start Jake Arrieta who faces the Diamondbacks for the first time. Arrieta has become the ace of the staff with a 5-1 record and 1.95 ERA over 13 outings.

The Diamondbacks season is over from a competitive standpoint so the remainder of 2014 could be used to try a few different lineups or give some younger players a look to see what they might be able to offer in 2015. The second half of the season has turned out well thus far with back to back victories with Wade Miley allowing three runs on seven hits through seven frames to pick up the win. The bats totaled 12 hits and four free passes with Paul Goldschmidt homering and driving in three with three runs scored while Miguel Montero knocked three more. Josh Collmenter toes the rubber in the final game of the series versus visiting Chicago. Collmenter has decent numbers with a 7-5 mark and 3.80 ERA with the Diamondbacks going 10-6 in his starts.
I believe Arrieta has taken over the role of ace for the Cubs but at some point I believe he will regress. I suppose if he pitches as he has the Cubs have a shot here but everytime I back them it's awful to watch...
