The Line: Pittsburgh Pirates -167 / Colorado Rockies +157 --- Over/Under: 8 See the Latest Odds

The Pittsburgh Pirates look to sweep the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

The Rockies have lost 10 of 14 games in the month of July and are 17 games below a .500 record. Usually it’s a Rockies pitching staff to blame, which has the worst ERA in baseball at 5.03. However, a usually solid Rockies batting order has produced three or fewer runs in 11 of their last 15 games. The Rockies have lost 23 of their last 24 games when scoring three or less runs. Charlie Blackmon has 13 hits in his last six games. Tyler Matzek takes the mound, and he’s 1-4 with a 4.97 ERA and has 24 strikeouts in 41.2 innings. This will be Matzek’s first career game against the Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies MLB Pick, Odds, Prediction - 7/20/14

The Pirates are looking to make another strong push towards the playoffs, as they’ve won seven of their last 12 games. The Pirates pitching staff continues to show signs of being what we expected by allowing three or less runs in 10 of their last 16 games. The Pirates have an overall ERA of 3.73 and have won 15 of their last 16 games when allowing three or less runs. Offensively, Neil Walker has crossed the plate three times in this series and Andrew McCutchen has 12 hits in his last 10 games. Starting is Jeff Locke, who is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA and has 35 strikeouts in 56 innings. This is Locke’s second career game against the Rockies.

The Rockies are 0-4 in Matzeks last 4 starts as an underdog and 0-6 in Matzeks last 6 starts overall. The Pirates are 5-1 in Lockes last 6 starts overall and 1-6 in Lockes last 7 starts with 8 or more days of rest.

Matzek has shown no reason to back him and the Rockies have shown no reason to back them, either. Due to the line being so crazy, I'm going to suggest the run line to give us a little more value for backing the Pirates in this spot.
