The Giants and Phillies hook up for game three of their four game series on ESPN.
The Giants rallied late on Tuesday night as Buster Posey tied the game at five with a solo shot in the 9th inning off Jonathan Papelbon and Brandon Crawford broke the tie with a three run double in the 14th inning on a fastball from Jeff Manship. Starter Yusmeiro Petit continued his trend of doing better work as a reliever than a starter allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings of work, but his team managed to get him off the hook with the type of gutty performance that reminds us why the Giants are a post-season contender. San Francisco should be tough to slow down on Wednesday as lefty Madison Bumgarner takes the hill in search of his 12th win of the year. Bumgarner hasn’t been in peak form in July amassing an ERA of 5.55, but he was sharp in his most recent outing against the Marlins allowing just one run on a solo homer and four hits over six innings of work. For the year Bumgarner has a WHIP of 1.24 and ERA of 3.38. The Giants are 28-19 on the road this year and also have a decided edge in the coaching department in addition to being more accustomed to performing under the spotlight of an ESPN audience.

The Phillies dropped to 19-31 at home with Tuesday’s loss as their disappointing season drags on despite having big name players on their roster. Despite having power hitters in Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd, the Phillies are 29th in the league in slugging at a paltry .362 and rank 26th in the league in runs scored while batting just .239 as a team on the year. Veteran right hander A.J. Burnett might make it difficult for Philly to overcome their offensive deficiencies as he enters this game off a rough start in St. Louis in his last start, allowing six runs on ten hits over five innings of work. Burnett still has the ability to get the strikeout with a solid curveball but his durability may be in question at this stage of the season as the 37 year old righty could be running out of steam as the season drags on. For the season Burnett has a WHIP of 1.36 and ERA of 4.08. With rumors swirling about a potential return to Pittsburgh it’s always possible Burnett could deliver a strong outing to stay marketable especially with this game airing on ESPN.
The Giants are just the far better team here and at -131 odds the books aren’t doing enough to deter us from backing them here. This is likely to be one of the heavier public sides of the day but I wouldn't be surprised to see the books get balance on this one as the number moves.
