The Mets and Mariners conclude their series with a day game at Safeco field.
Mets rookie Jacob deGrom delivered a strong performance on Tuesday night limiting the Mariners to just one run on five hits over seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the year and the Mets did just enough at the plate scoring three runs on six hits in a 3-1 win. The win brought the Mets to 2-3 on their road trip out of the All-Star break as the team continues clawing towards the .500 mark. For Wednesday’s rubber match the Mets will turn to Bartolo Colon who has seen the Mariners plenty in recent history after playing in the AL West the past two seasons. Colon was impressive to start the year but you have to think that age is catching up to the 41 year old right hander at this stage of the season. Colon has an ERA of 5.40 in three July starts and for the season holds a WHIP of 1.18 and ERA of 4.12. The Mariners are familiar with his mechanics and since Colon relies so heavily on his fastball and changeup, even strong location of those pitches might not be enough to keep him out of trouble in this matchup. The Mets are 22-30 away from home on the season.

The Mariners couldn’t get anything going at the plate on Tuesday night which has been somewhat of a theme for the club this season with a .247 team average and ranking of 19th in the league in runs scored. Nonetheless the Mariners still would make the playoffs as the wildcard if they started today despite being realistically out of reach in the top heavy AL West. The Mariners will look to improve upon their 25-27 home record at Safeco Field as they send 21 year old righty Taijuan Walker to the mound for his third start of the year after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. In two starts Walker is 1-1 with a WHIP of 1.4 and ERA of 3.60. In three starts in 2013, Walker also had an ERA of 3.60 across 15 innings of work.
The Mariners send a relatively unknown commodity to the mound in this one but as the better team and home team they are the play here. The stronger play in my opinion is to play the Mariners team total as I think Colon is regressing and facing a team that knows him well doesn't figure to help that fact.
