The Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals play game two of four on Friday night.
The Indians have dropped back to a .500 record with four losses in their last five games. It’s a lack of offense that’s been hurting the Indians lately, as they’ve scored three or fewer runs in their last four losses. In fact, 10 of the Indians last 11 losses have come when they’ve been held to three or fewer runs. It’s usually the pitching staff that has cost Cleveland games, as they have an ERA of 3.90. David Murphy has hit safely in six of his last 10 games and Carlos Santana has eight hits in his last four games. Taking the mound is Josh Tomlin, who is 5-7 with a 4.43 ERA and has 72 strikeouts in 81.1 innings. Tomlin is 5-3 with a 5.10 ERA in 11 career games against the Royals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Royals have bounced back a bit with wins in three straight games as they move back to a game above .500. The Royals pitching staff has allowed just one run in each of their last three games and has an overall ERA of 3.71, which is 13th in the majors. The Royals have won eight of their last 11 games when allowing three or less runs. Offensively, Omar Infante has hit safely in seven of his last 10 games and Alex Gordon has 14 hits in his last 10 games. Starting is Yordano Ventura, who is 7-8 with a 3.59 ERA and has 88 strikeouts in 107.2 innings. Ventura is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three career starts against the Indians.
The Indians are 0-4 in Tomlins last 4 starts vs. American League Central and 1-6 in Tomlins last 7 starts overall. The Royals are 3-8 in Venturas last 11 home starts and 1-7 in Venturas last 8 starts as a favorite.
Neither one of these pitchers can catch a break and neither one of these teams is consistent. So, I'm taking a shot in the dark here and picking the team that gives us more bang for our buck.
